First performed by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Oliver Knussen at the Bath Festival on 8 June 1984, Derive 1 also borrows the instrumental forces of an illustrious model, Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire (1913): flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano, to which a vibraphone part is added.
