Additional information: • Meet John Cage (1912-1992). He was one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century with a highly original approach to music. He even “composed” silence. The part of his output which is best known is his music for prepared piano, changing the piano into a real percussion instrument. • Oriental influences and a lack of harmonic progress are main features of this music. As are rhythmic regularity and a lack of tension. • Remarkably the pieces cover a relatively short period of time: 1940-1951. After this Cage moved on to different means of expression including both conventional ensembles and forms and certainly at the time unconventional materials like plants, telephones and taped music. • This set offers an opportunity to (re)discover one of the pioneers of 20th-century music. Cage was definitely an avant-garde composer, but especially this repertoire for prepared piano proves to be unexpectedly accessible.
